A well-received player on the Bay Area restaurant scene, Taste of
Joy Barbeque and Southern Cuisine opened on Lakeshore Blvd., Oakland
in March 2009. Executive Chef Brian L. Hill and Colette Coyle Hill
privately and wholly own Taste of Joy. After a successful launch, the
owners had opportunity to expand by relocating to Grand Avenue,
Oakland. The Grand Avenue location opened November 2009.

Taste of Joy is a restaurant boutique. The primary culinary focus is
a fusion of barbeque and southern style cuisine (“southern comfort”).
Taste of Joy is a full service restaurant that serves its customers through
the flagship location. In addition to eat in and take out, Taste of Joy
provides catering services to private/individual and corporate/business
customers.

In recent years, a southern cuisine renaissance has emerged and is
well underway in the San Francisco Bay Area, with several popular
restaurants offering a culinary celebration of regionally specific southern
cuisine and culture. Offering a fusion of barbecue and traditional southern
dishes (with a contemporary preparation), Taste of Joy strives to be
among the Bay Area’s premier, trendsetting restaurants. Taste of Joy is
differentiated by its outstanding food and unsurpassed customer
experience/service as it promotes a celebration of culinary and cultural
heritage.

Brian L. Hill

Executive Chef and Owner

Although his food speaks for itself, it is only half the story.  Executive Chef Brian L. Hill, proprietor of Taste of Joy, is as delightful as his food is delicious. 

Brian Hill PhotoA Bay Area native, and a 1988 graduate of the California Culinary Academy, Chef Hill has more than twenty years of experience as an executive chef for some of the most highly regarded hotels, including Hyatt, Hilton and Omni as well as several renowned restaurants such as Bob’s Steak and Chop House, Neptune’s Palace and Moxie.

In 2009, Chef Hill decided to combine his innate culinary talent with his business acumen and, to critical acclaim, opened Taste of Joy in the Lakeshore District of Oakland, California. Taste of Joy is a full-service restaurant that specializes in barbeque and southern cuisine.

In addition to being a culinary artisan, Chef Hill’s exuberant personality is one that immediately makes his patrons feel at home.  The customer experience at Taste of Joy is only rivaled by the remarkable food.  A charming individual with an easy going approach, Chef Hill exudes warmth as he welcomes his restaurant patrons as if he were entertaining them in his home, offering traditional southern comfort prepared with contemporary flair.
